International English Language Testing System (IELTS)


    International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an English proficiency test accepted by most UK, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions is recognized by more than 6000 institutions in 135 countries. In recent years, it is increasing accepted by universities and college in the US.

    Unless exempted by the institutions, students usually are required to show proof of English language proficiency in order to secure a place at most post-secondary institutions in English-speaking countries like Australia, America, Canada, Singapore and UK.

    In IELTS, test-takers are tested on listening, reading, writing and speaking with the speaking test being a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.

    Students taking IELTS for the purpose of academic studies need to take the academic testing and the test format is as follows-

1) Listening - 4 sections, 40 items, 30 minutes
2) Reading - 3 sections, 40 items, 60 minutes
3) Writing - 2 tasks, 150 & 250 words, 60 minutes
4) Speaking - face-to-face interview, 11 to 14 minutes

    We recommend students to register with British Council in person to take their IELTS as it is more convenient located at 30 Napier Road Singapore 258509 (diagonally opposite to Tanglin Mall). 



To register for IELTS test in person at the British Council, students need to
1) complete the IELTS Application Form,
2) glue 2 recent passport-size photographs (must not wear glasses) to the application form 
    and attach the other one to the form with a paper-clip and
3) bring along the original and photocopy of your NRIC if you are Singaporean, or your  
    passport or work permit/student pass if you are not Singaporean
4) also bring along an application fee of Singapore Dollars Three Hundred and Ten only
    (S$310.00) in cash, cheque, nets or credit cards (Visa/Master Card) to the customer
    service counter at British Council, 30 Napier Road.

- Monday to Friday -- 9am to 7:30pm 
- Saturday -- 9am to 4:00pm
- Sunday -- 9am to 1:30pm 
- All Public Holidays - closed
